Frankfort - Carl Mitchell, Jr., 91, of Frankfort, Kentucky went to be with his Lord on Sunday, October 14, 2018, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Woodford County on August 15, 1927, to the late Carl, Sr. and Sadie Goins Mitchell.
Carl was a devoted husband, brother, father, grandfather and great-grandfather (“Pap”). He and his wife Louise “Weezie” Bryant Mitchell were married August 21, 1948, and recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. They were blessed with three loving children Glenn (Marlana) Mitchell, Carla (Tom) Gillion, and Lou Anne Mitchell; grandchildren Kristin Gillion and Grant (Whitney) Gillion; great-grandchildren Makena, Rylan, Talan, Kaedyn, and Nolan Gillion. Carl was preceded in death by his brother, James E. Mitchell and special uncle J.T. Mitchell. He is survived by his sister Annette Leathers, and brother Pete Mitchell, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Mitchell was a charter member of Highland Christian Church serving as a deacon, elder, board member and chairman. He was an active member of the Franklin County Farm Bureau for more than 50 years, and served as president for 13 years spanning three different decades. He served on the Kentucky Farm Bureau Federation Board for 18 years, and for 15 of those years he sat on the KFB Insurance Board of Directors, guiding one of the largest insurance companies in Kentucky. He received numerous awards over the years for his commitment and service, particularly to agricultural organizations. He was a board member for the Franklin County Extension Service, the Franklin County Fair, the Area Extension Council, the Soil Conservation Service, the Frankfort Chamber of Commerce, and the Burley Advisory Committee. For many of these groups, he did terms as Chairman. Carl enjoyed being a farmer, and was innovative and successful in his long career. Partnering with his father and brother James, the Mitchells’ farming operation raised tobacco, cattle, sheep, grain and hay on many hundreds of acres in Franklin and Owen Counties. After retiring, his well-known commercial vegetable garden became his passion. He was also a great cook, and many people loved his deliveries of delicious country ham and biscuits. Carl was passionate about UK sports, especially basketball. He had been a season ticket holder since 1950 and attended every game he could, and when he couldn’t, family and friends enjoyed his seats.
