Evelyn (Weber) Cartmill, 98, widow of Donald J. Cartmill, died on Mar. 20, 2021. She was born Mar. 17, 1923 on Moss Hill farm on McCowans Ferry Rd., Woodford County, KY, to teenage farmers, the late Ernest Winfield Weber and Nellie Bailey Weber.
Her first year of school was in the Clear Creek one room school on the grounds of Clear Creek Baptist Church, Pinckard Pike, Woodford County. In 1930, the school system began bus transportation. She attended the 4-room Mortonsville Elementary School and finished 8th grade in 1936. While attending Versailles High School she was active in Beta Club, Drama Club and the Debate team. She graduated from Transylvania College in 1944 with an A.B. degree in Business Economics and English Literature as well as a secondary school teaching certificate.
For nearly 20 years, she was Deputy Regional Minister of the Christian Church (Disciple of Christ) in Tennessee. In 1965, under her leadership, all events of the Tennessee Christian Women’s Fellowship and all other regional events were integrated. She served 2 terms on the Executive Committee of the International Christian Women’s Fellowship in the United States and Canada. In 1970, she was elected the first woman Elder for Vine Street Christian Church (D of C) in Nashville and in the state of Tennessee. In 1976, she was ordained to Christian Ministry. She was an active member of South Elkhorn Christian Church (D of C) where she was an Elder and held many positions of leadership. She was a member of the Salvation Army Service Unit of Versailles/Woodford County and P.E.O. Chapter S in Versailles. She was a patron of the Woodford Theatre for 25 years.
She is survived by a sister Marilyn McDaniel; nieces, Gloria Gilkison (Gary), Brenda Naylor (Ronnie); and Rosalie Stone; nephews, William A. McDaniel, Jr., Thomas Lee McDaniel (Susan) and Jerry Cartmill; and many great nieces and nephews. Visitation, Fri., Mar. 26 2021, 4-8 PM, Milward-Southland and on Sat., Mar. 27, 2021, 10-11 AM, South Elkhorn Christian Church. Funeral will be Sat., Mar. 27, 2021, 11 AM at the church with burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
