Larry Maddox

April 6, 1923 — January 10, 2017

Larry Howard Maddox, 94, of Louisville, died peacefully at the VA hospital in Lexington KY on January 10, 2018. A 1949 graduate of the University of Missouri, he was employed for 31 years as personnel director at Norton Children's Hospital in Louisville. A WWII army veteran, he was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained when his transport ship, the SS Leopoldville, was sunk by a German U-boat on Christmas Eve 1944, as his regiment was being sent to fight in the Battle of the Bulge.

As a teenager, Larry helped his family survive the Great Depression in Madisonville KY by rising at 4am every morning to deliver the Louisville Courier-Journal. He also played baseball for the semi-pro Madisonville baseball team where he received $1 per game and $1 for every home run he hit.

Larry had many varied interests. He was an avid golfer at Woodhaven and Wildwood Country Clubs in Louisville and a patron, with his wife of 41 years, Clara Luchini Maddox, of many community arts including Actors Theatre, the Louisville Orchestra, the opera, and ballet.

He was the youngest son of Everett and Gola Maddox of Madisonville KY. He is survived by two sons and a daughter, Eric Maddox (Andrea), Susan Maddox, Gregory Maddox (Sarah), four grandchildren Caitlin, Sally, Isla, and Savannah, and two nieces Fausta Luchini and Julia Inman. Eric was Larry's dedicated care manager the last decade of his life.
