Thelma Kiser

December 25, 1916 — April 20, 2019

Thelma Christine Scott Kiser, 102, Frankfort, KY, widow of Alan Boyd Kiser, passed away on Saturday, April 20, 2019.
Her funeral will be at 1:00pm on Wednesday, April 24, at Clark Legacy Center, Versailles Road, Frankfort, KY (Next to Sunset Memorial Garden). Visitation will be from 11:00am until 1:00pm.
She was born on December 25, 1916 in Jessamine County, Kentucky, and was the first born on seven children to the late Robert and Mattie Scott. She attended Transylvania University, Kentucky Christian College, and the University of Kentucky. She was employed as a chemist at Ashland Oil Company, as an agricultural chemist at the University of Kentucky, and as a federal meat inspector in the Ashland area.
She was an avid poet, writing hundreds of poems. For many years, she wrote a weekly poem to accompany the Sunday School lesson for The Lookout, a Christian magazine, and later, a crossword puzzle to go with the weekly lesson. From 1967 to 1972, she was the Editor of Pegasus, the newsletter of the Kentucky State Poetry Society, for which she served several years as President. Thelma wrote a book review column on a regular basis for many years for the Ashland Daily Independent newspaper. She was a member of the Kentucky Book Fair. She was a member of Capital City Christian Church, where she served as one of the librarians.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Elizabeth Scott Williams, Shoals, IN, her brothers, Robert Lee Scott, Jacksonville Beach, FL, James Russell Scott, Tulsa, OK, John William Scott, Vancouver, WA, Dr. Paul W. Scott, Ottumwa, IA, and her step-son, Boyd Douglas Kiser, Dry Ridge, KY.
She is survived by her youngest brother, Thomas Arthur Scott (Barbara Jo), Frankfort, KY; her sister-in-law, V. Scott, Ottumwa, IA; her step-grandson, Douglas Dow (Jill) Kiser, Schererville, IN, whom she helped to raise as a child; a step-great grandson, Joshua Alan Kiser, Dry Ridge, KY; a step-great great granddaughter, Aliyah Rose Kiser; twenty six nephews and nieces; and numerous great and great-great nephews and nieces.
Thelma was lovingly cared for in her late years by her niece and nephew, Cindy and Steve Popp and their family.
In lieu of flower, memorial contributions may be made to Avenues for Women.
